The United States Congress enacted the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, in 1980. The act was passed to deal with abandoned toxic waste dumps that were discovered in the 1970s. Today, Superfund remains a significant financial exposure to corporations that may have contributed to the disposal of these materials in the past.
